Guide to Looking Good

1. Factor Up
With the number of skin cancers in men on the rise protecting yourself from sunburn isn’t just a good idea looks-wise, it might just save your life too. So avoid binge burning (i.e. spending six hours hanging out on a Lilo) and build up your exposure to the sun gradually instead, avoiding the sun between noon and 3pm and making sure you slap on the sunscreen before hitting the beach.

Protect your face with Face Cream SPF30 which provides high-level defence against the sun’s ageing UVA and burning UVB rays. And don’t forget to pack Body Spray SPF25 which is ideal for reaching those tricky bits and is also brilliant for preventing a burnt head if you’re a bit thin on top!

Tip: if you do over-do it, slap on plenty of After Sun Rescue Balm to help reduce redness and minimise unsightly peeling.

2. Protect Your Hair.

It isn’t just your skin that needs protecting when you’re soaking up the sun - your hair does too. The UV rays that damage your skin play havoc with your hair’s cellular structure too, depleting it of protective oils and making it brittle and porous. So keep your thatch covered where possible or invest in shampoos and styling products containing UV filers.

Sea water and chlorine are bad news for your barnet too, leaving it dull, while dried-out salt and grains of sand can rip the hair’s cuticles making it feel rough and reducing shine. To correct the problem never allow it to dry out in the sun without rinsing with clean water first.

3. Forget the thong!
To ensure your bod looks its absolute best make sure you choose your beachwear carefully. If you’re tall and thin avoid vertical stripes and anything baggy. Go for knee-length board shorts instead which are much more flattering. Steer clear of loud patterns if you’re short and skip long shorts if you’ve a beer belly - they’ll merely draw attention to your gut. And if you’re worried about the size of your backside go for dark colours, matt fabrics and loose styles that won’t emphasise your bumps. Don’t even think about Speedos unless you’re built like Beckham.

Did you know...
Evaporating salt water can suck the moisture out of skin, leaving dry and flaky so never allow skin to dry off in the sun after a dip in the sea. Towel dry instead and, if possible, shower with tap water first.

Tip of the month:

Tone up as you holiday by treating the beach as a free gym. Jogging on wet sand can burn off twice as many calories as road running, a half hour swim zaps 250 calories and even a 30 minute Frisbee session can help you offload 200 calories!

Q. I always seem to end up with cold sores in summer. How can I prevent them?

A. Cold sores are common in summer because exposure to the sun can temporarily surpress the immune sytem giving the virus that causes the cold sores a perfect opportunity to strike. To minimise your risk bulit up sun exposure gradually, protect skin with a sunscreen and bolster the immune system with plenty of fresh fruit and veg (and go easy on the partying!)

Watching what you eat can help too. Grub known to trigger cold sores includes crusty bread (it leaves tiny cuts around the lips which the virus loves), acidic foods like tomatoes and strawberries and ones like chocolate, nuts and wholewheat which contain an aminio acid called arginine which helps the virus reproduce. What makes your lips even more vulnerable is their lack of protective oil-producing glands so keep them moisturised at all times.
